December Round Robin Championships

Tuesday 2.0/2.5 - The finals pitted Suzanne McCall and Mike Micheletti vs. Cintia Jarrett and Darrell Rommel.  There were many long rallies and some close, but definitely OUT, calls that ultimately led to victory for the team of Suzanne and Mike.  Final score was 15 - 9 but it was a much closer game than the score reflects!

Tuesday 3.5 - The Championship game included Dave Andrews, a regular contender at the championships, and Rhonda Grundeis vs. Glen Grundeis (yes, husband & wife opposing each other for bragging rights!) and Daniel Castro, a new member at this level (about one month and already in the Championship!)  The wind was a factor, gusts of 25mph, that both teams had to contend with for the first half of the match.  Nevertheless, there were two memorable rallies of 15 & 12 hits each, and, with the wind abating, some fine NVZ line play with well-played dinks from both sides.  But Dave & Rhonda started out ahead, built on their lead, and finished by winning 15 - 6.

Wednesday 2.5 - Not held.

Thursday 3.5 - Rained out the last week of December, but the weather cooperated yesterday!  Dave Cottongim and Judi Mackey took on Randy Cobb and Jerry James.  It was a close match throughout, with some great rallies.  It took 'overtime' to end it, but team Randy and Jerry prevailed with a final score of 16 - 14.

Friday 3.0 - Holy Moses, what a fun game!  Going into the finals, Jim Crum had not lost a single match EXCEPT for the one where he was partnered with his wife Mary.  Lo and behold, they were partnered again in the finals, vs. the team of Dave Scalia & Ann Steiner.  Dave & Ann took the early lead, the Crums fought back, and we had an epic battle.  In the end, Dave maintained his perfect record for the day and Ann got her first Championship victory (in her only time to play in this event.)   The score was tied at 12 - 12, but some successful serving led to a final score of 15 - 12. Thanks to Gail Raney for ref'ing, kudos to the RR folks who stayed in the cold to cheer, and our most enthusiastic fan, Moses!  (photo below).   Everyone had a blast!

Monday 3.0 - Mike Doyle and Carol Hunter provided a tough match vs. Michael Gregory and Bob Fleckenstein on beautiful, sunny Boxing Day (12/26 for non-Brits).  The match featured some hard hitting, great strategy, heroic drop shots, esp. from Bob, great serves, esp. from Mike, and Carol's bravery with hand to hand combat at the kitchen line.  But with a clutch wide-angle hit from Mike, he and Bob won 15-11.
