President’s Update 12/24/18

Happy Holidays Picklers, from your PPA board!

We have lots planned, beginning with our next Social Jan 16th.  Please join us at Red Robbin ($5 cover) for Happy Hour (4-6).  Address is 3055 Gateway Blvd…….be there!

We finished a long holiday board meeting on the 20th, reviewing the upcoming Calendar.  Right now I can tell you Lessons (Beginning, Novice, and an Intermediate Clinic) will start in March of ’19.  We will also be announcing the start of PPA Round Robins for 3.0, 3.5, and 4.0+.  Details on how to sign up for all of these will be released shortly.

I also met with the City, and reviewed next steps regarding the southern bank, and possible drainage solutions which may include and additional seating area.  More to come on this one.

Everyone has budgets and we reviewed ours (current Net Income, and ’19 Operating budget).  I’ll cut to the chase……we’re very healthy in terms of current NI (excess of $17K), but don’t get overly excited…we’re spending most of it on capital improvements ($10k donation to 4 more, and the drainage/terrace I mentioned earlier). That’s the beauty of our club, everything earned is plowed right back into the courts, or events for members. There are also some smaller projects we’ll be working as the budget permits.  We’re aware there are more project opportunities (shade, lighting), and they’re not forgotten, just scheduled when we (and the city) have more resources and money (later ’19, or ’20).

PPA membership is important.  Volunteering is important, and donating/pledging is important.  Lets start with the first.  Renewing (for those of you that haven’t, pls give yourself an Xmas present and renew!) drives programs, lessons, and events, many of which are paid for by your club’s fee.  So please join or renew asap (or risk losing out on these great emails, with future offers). Next Volunteering…….we’ll be offering lots of training (for ref’s, clinics, drills etc)………when you get the chance to participate (volunteer) for a tournament, pls do so, we need your participation to run the tournament, and demonstrate that we can attract top level talent to Prescott’s tournaments.  Bottom line, we can’t do it without you.

Last (and I mean last), your donation/pledge will help us build the next 4 courts (for a total of 12)…….which allows more people to play, less congestion, and bigger tournaments……..which attracts more talent to our club, which makes everyone better pickleballers.  So, if you can, hit that button and lets make it happen, we’re at the point where I think we can start getting some hard numbers, and issue a contract very soon (yahoo).

Happy Holidays to all of you, I’ve enjoyed playing with you and working for you…….enjoy the season, and get ready for lots of activities starting in March.

Happy Holidays,
Roger

Fundraising Update…now at $81,160

We’re at $81,160 in terms of donations and pledges.  It’s still NOT TOO LATE to either donate or pledge and get that good feeling from creating something for your community.  We need at least 100kish to start the project, and of course your club (PPA) will continue to donate Operating Income (next year again, from member dues and tournament earnings) to help reach the $115k mark.

President’s Update 12/14/18

Tis the Season,
To PLAY PICKLEBALL!  Happy Holidays to all our PPA members, hopefully the cool (ok COLD) mornings aren’t keeping you from playing pickleball.  If you are, you’ve probably gone through a few balls (Durafast and Franklin).  Cracked balls are a way of life, and unless you’re willing to switch to Onyx (more of a rubber feeling), it’s a fact of life you’ll have to live with (especially if you’re a tournament player).  We do however offer a graveyard service for all those cracked balls……Diane Cassidy has made (in addition to the nice Xmas wreath) a unique final resting place for all those cracked balls.  Please put cracked balls in our new “cracked ball” receptacle………they will get recycled into future works of art for the club.

Our next PPA board meeting is coming up this next Thursday, December 20 (remember 1:00 pm, Flagstone Room, Grace Sparkes Activity Center (Old Armory), just before downtown).  I’ve had a chance to review and comment on the following:

Social Events (yeahhhh Jaye)……you’re going to love em.
Training Schedules for Beginning thru Advanced.
Tournament Schedules for this coming year.
Drills and Skills, and Round Robins.

Additionally, we’ll be looking at upcoming capital improvements (think Terrace with Seating at the back of the courts), as well as 4 More…..which is a separate subject.

Last week I promised to continue highlighting significant achievements on the court by publishing tournament medal winners, starting with Terry’s gold a Nationals.  Seems that winning just ONE gold at Nationals was not good enough for Larry Laux…….he won GOLD in Mens Doubles, and Silver in MXD!   It’s a huge win for PPA to have ONE medal winner in Nationals, but TWO…..who would have thought our young club was already attracting such attention!  More to come on the medal front, we’ll be publishing medal winners (and we do have MORE MEDAL WINNERS) for our other regional/national winners in future updates in a more formal fashion via newsletter.

Bottom line, you’re PPA Board is working tremendously hard to bring capital  improvements, new courts and programs for our members…more to come.

Roger

Congratulations to our PPA 2018 Margaritaville USA Pickleball National Championships Medalists

President’s Update 12/1/18

Gooood Morning Picklers……….and what a COLD morning it is.  We’re starting to get into weather patterns that mean cracked balls, and more injuries.  Tips include keeping a few pickleballs in your coat pocket, rotating them into play frequently, preventing an increase in cracked balls.  Next, if you’re the kind of person that goes to the courts and jumps right into active play, this weather makes it even more risky in terms of injury……well worth your time to warm up and STRETCH before play.
OK, onto new news………did you know we have a GOLD MEDAL National Champion in our Club?  Congratulations to Terry Gutierrez for taking GOLD during Nationals (Women’s 4.0).  I’ll be featuring ALL our medal winners in future articles, something PPA can be very proud of going forward.
Did you know that Rick Bothel will become a Certified USAPA trainer!  Congrats Rick, the club will benefit from your dedication.
Welcome to Tracey Thompson, our new PPA Secretary! Tracey was confirmed earlier this week, via electronic vote, and she’s already hit the ground running. The position had remained open since our last board rotation. Thank you for stepping up to the task.
My team has been busy, and I’ve been reviewing preliminary Calendar Event scheduling for Round Robins, and Training. January is our target for releasing the new schedule. We’ll be gathering feedback throughout the winter in expectation of a busy Spring/Summer activity schedule. We’re definitely going to need the additional courts based upon the sport’s continued popularity, and all the activities we’ll have scheduled.
Our next Board Meeting is December 20, 1 pm, Flagstone room at Grace Sparkes Activity Center (Prescott Armory). Stop by if you have the chance, your board will be reporting out progress on all our objectives.
Last, but not Least, Funding for 4 More is now at $80,060!  Yahooo, we’re getting close to the point where we can start the process……keep that finger hovering over the DONATE button, we still need help. This is a lasting way for donors to visibly show friends and family their legacy contributions have brought so much joy to the community.
Pickle on, Roger
